A new and innovative surgical approach to treating Haglund deformity

Abstract

Haglund’s deformity, a posterosuperior calcaneal prominence, is a common cause of posterior heel pain, prominently affecting the Achilles tendon and supero-anterior bursa. First described in 1927, it is often idiopathic and may be exacerbated by factors such as age, obesity, and systemic inflammatory diseases. Typically seen in active individuals, especially females, conservative management often resolves symptoms. However, in persistent cases, surgical intervention becomes necessary. This study presents an innovative sigma incision technique for surgical management, allowing for enhanced exposure and minimal tendon retraction, thereby reducing complication risks. Results from six patients showed significant pain reduction and improvements in function, with no post-surgical complications noted. This approach offers advantages over traditional methods, including quicker rehabilitation and lower risk of Achilles tendon damage, indicating a promising avenue for effective treatment of Haglund’s deformity
